Everyone has dreams but do those dreams blossom into reality? If you find you start a new goal all guns blazing but then find yourself sliding into inaction, it’s time to examine why.
What are the reasons you tell yourself are valid enough to keep you glued to the spot?
These reasons are beliefs that you have - but that doesn’t mean they’re valid reasons.
Here are the 5 Beliefs that Keep You Stuck:
1. Not Enough Time
Everyone is busy these days. When someone asks how you are doing, you probably respond with ‘busy-busy-busy’.
But is that the truth? Everyone has the same twenty-four hours in the day.
For a week or maybe two, keep a note of how you spent your time. This includes sleeping, preparing and eating meals, social media, getting ready for work, cleaning your house. Take a good look at how your time is spent. You might realize you have more time than you realize.
Sometimes, the best way to master time management and make more time for your goals is simply this – stop doing the shit that doesn’t need to be done! And put a time limit on everything else. Challenge yourself to get stuff done in the minimum amount of time. Set a timer and…. Go!
2. I Don’t Have ‘X’ Talent
It doesn’t matter if you want to write a book or paint a picture, you have as much talent as you are willing to work for. You may not have been born with the natural ability to paint, even Picasso had to learn his art. it doesn’t mean you can’t learn and practice. Want to learn something new? Make the internet your new private tutor. There are loads of resources on Google and YouTube to give you background knowledge and inspiration – and for free. How cool is that?
3. After ‘X’ I'll Do It
Do you tell yourself something like the following:
‘Once I get through this (insert tough project/situation/a.k.a. reason for procrastination and remaining stuck), I will start training for that marathon.’
‘After I lose twenty pounds, I will take a salsa dancing class.’
Why are you waiting? Maybe that marathon training will help you work through the stress of that project at work. Perhaps salsa dancing lessons will allow you realize that no matter your weight, your body is worthy of fun and movement. If you have a goal, go for it now!
4. I’m Not Good Enough
Says who? What ruler are you using to measure your ‘good enough’? You’re always good enough to go after your own dreams and goals. If this is an internal dialogue, then you need to work on liking and loving yourself first. If this belief is coming from external sources, then consider those sources and if they're holding you back – and why you’re allowing them to.
5. ‘X’ Person Has it Easier
The grass is greener where you water it. Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. There are many sayings that sum up that you really don’t know what someone else is going through. So don’t assume that someone has it easier, and therefore can achieve their goals while you think you’ll struggle. That person may think you have it easier or better!
Self-limiting beliefs can be a slippery slope. They can also keep you from even trying to reach your goals. Take time to examine your beliefs about yourself:
Are those beliefs even yours or did you unwittingly take on someone else’s beliefs?
When did you first think it would be a good idea to have unhelpful beliefs about who you are and what you’re capable of doing?
What actions can you take to overcome these beliefs and help yourself get unstuck? Would a counsellor or life coach help? If not now, then when?
If you’re feeling stuck, it’s time to slay those mindset monsters and belief beasts. It’s also time to realize that nobody else is coming to save you from yourself. It’s up to you to do the work.
