Create an Oasis of Calm

When you create an Oasis of Calm during your busy day, you reduce the level of anxiety you feel.


Anxiety is the result of accumulated tension that has built up over some time. Everyday annoyances, disturbances and worries increase until the body-mind system reaches overload. This leads to scattered energy and a confused mind.


One remedy is regular relaxation. Relax not just at the start or end of the day but, more importantly, create an Oasis of Calm throughout the day. This will help to regularly recharge your batteries and stop you going into a downward spiral of anxiety.


Awareness is key. Learn to recognise your reaction to outside disturbances and inner disquiet. Become the witness to your mind-body connection. Learn to observe what happens and respond appropriately.


Create an Oasis of Calm Exercise:


When you experience regret about the past, or worry about the future, bring your awareness to the present.


Focus only on what you can see, hear,touch, smell and taste in this exact moment.


Use switchwords (one-word mantras) as you inhale and exhale (such as ‘Together’ on the in breath, and ‘Change’ on the out breath).


As you do so, where possible, still all bodily movement and concentrate only on your breathing and using the switchwords in your mind.


This technique enables you to regain control before your mind goes into overdrive. It allows you to train your brain to be calm in all situations. With practice, this technique will help you switch over to a state of calm instantly.
