Discover the magic of journaling? Is there such a thing? Does the thought of journaling your thoughts on paper seem like a waste of time? It may appear so, after all you’re all about the action, right?
Whether it’s school, work, home pressures, we’re ‘trained’ to keep our heads down, keep busy, and keep moving forwards.
Are You Going in the Right Direction?
It's fine and dandy if you’re headed in the direction of total happiness. Yet, it’s all too easy to power forwards towards a destination that ultimately leads you into the hamster wheel of misery. Onwards and upwards and - still feeling stuck… Sound familiar?
If life isn’t exactly how you want it to be, then it’s time for a big change. That’s best achieved by making small changes that lead to massive growth. And one small change you can make is to begin journaling.
Journaling is a Powerful Tool.
Writing down your thoughts is a powerful tool that can speed you towards incredible personal growth. Reflecting on your day and the thoughts in your mind provides huge benefits. A surprising number of highly successful people make journaling a daily habit because it helps them focus on what’s important. Get it down on paper and then get into action is the way to go.
You can learn a lot about yourself and gain massive insight into your life. There’s something magical about writing that thinking alone just doesn’t have. While you can type your journal into your computer, most people find it more effective to use actual paper and write.
That’s because you’re accessing your subconscious mind through what you’re thinking and what you’re seeing written down before you. There’s clarity instead of mental fog. More importantly, the physical act of writing slows down your thought process, so that you can concentrate more fully on the issue you’re writing about. And all of these combine together to train your brain to work with you, instead of against you, simply and elegantly.
Focus Your Mind.
You see, your subconscious can only work for you, when you give it the right thing to work on. And journaling is an effective way to instruct your mind to help you reach your goals. That's the magic of journaling - it's not so much the hocus-pocus, it's much more about the focus-focus!
“Journaling is paying attention to the inside for the purpose of living well from the inside out.” – Lee Wise

Use these tips to take advantage of journaling to gain insight into your mind and your life:
Review your day. Take a look at your day and make some notes.
• What happened?
• How can you use this in the future?
• What did you learn?
• What mistakes did you make?
• How can tomorrow be better than today?
List progress toward your goals.
Think about your goals and list the progress you made toward each. If you failed to do anything to make progress toward one or more of your goals, note that, too.
• Be proud of the progress you’ve made and reward yourself.
• Become more determined by the progress you failed to make.
Address your fears.
Write about your fears. What are you afraid of? Why do you think you’re afraid of those things? How do your fears impact your life? What is your plan to address those fears?
Choose one way to enhance yourself.
Pick something you want to work on and work on it. Write about it in your journal. Perhaps you want to lose 10 pounds or strengthen your communication. Choose something that would enhance your life. Write about your plans and progress.
List your goals each day.
Writing down your goals each day is a powerful way to stay focused on them. Write your 10 most important goals each day and notice how they evolve over time.
List five things that make you feel grateful.
What are you grateful for? Make a list of several items each day and notice how your perspective on life changes.
Write about the obstacles in your life.
What’s standing in your way? List the obstacles in your life that you believe are blocking you from happiness or achieving your goals.
Make a plan for the future.
Aside from your specific goals, what does your dream life look like? How are you planning on getting there? Think about it and sketch out a plan.
Write about what is causing you to feel negative emotions.
What is getting you down? What are the situations, people, habits, and beliefs that are causing you the most grief? Why do these things bother you? What can you do about it? What if you simply decided to let go of these negative emotions? What would that feel like?
List the best thing and the worst thing that happened today.
What are these two things and what was so great or terrible about them? What can you learn from these?
Use journaling prompts.
There are unlimited number of journal prompts you can choose to use at any time. Here are a few examples to get you started:
• Make a wish list of things you want to be, do, have or experience.
• List five things you appreciate about your home.
• Describe your ideal day using all five senses.
• If I could speak to my teenage self, I would say…
• I wish that others knew I…
• The best things about me are…
• I wish I could say no to...
• List ten things you could change or create to make your life easier.
Journaling each day can take dedicated time, but it’s time well spent. Develop a routine that incorporates journaling into your life. Do what the most successful people in the world do and write about your thoughts and your life. Just ten minutes a day can make a huge difference. It won’t be long before you begin noticing the benefits!
“I don’t journal to ‘be productive.’ I don’t do it to find great ideas or to put down prose I can later publish. The pages aren’t intended for anyone but me. It’s the most cost-effective therapy I’ve ever found.” – Tim Ferriss

So, I'm a massive fan of journaling as a way to dig deep into subconscious sabotage and innate creativity. But I like to do this in a methodical way, otherwise insight can go the way of easily forgotten! Enter the Bullet Journal Method, which is a way that I combine goal planning with personal development. This method helps me to keep on track with journaling. My journal is not simply a notebook, it's a record of my self-development, personal growth, and helps me to keep track of what needs to be my main priority. This is a top self-help tool to get from jumbled thoughts and confusion, into joined up writing that becomes joined up thinking, which leads to total clarity.

One way to help make journaling a daily habit is to make it a ritual. By that I mean a ritual that is both sensual and calming. Take ten minutes out of your busy day to put on some calming music (my choice is Enya playing quietly in the background), light a candle, and add a luxurious pen and top quality journal into the mix. Apart from being a delight to the senses, turning your journaling habit into a personal ritual trains your mind that it's time to make a direct connection to your inner wisdom. Over time, you'll find you're automatically tuned into your deepest intuition the second that you begin writing.
