It's Quitters Day

The Truth About Quitters Day (and How to Make Sure You Don’t Become a Statistic)

Let’s talk about something that’s uncomfortably real. Now that Santa has been and gone, and we're post the New Year's celebration and the bubbly's gone flat, but it was fun, wasn't it? I’m talking about Quitters Day—which falls on the second Friday of every January.

That’s right—today! Less than two weeks into the shiny new year, and half of those people who made New Year's resolutions will have already flunked them.

Ouch! I know...

Don't join the Quitters Day gang!

But let’s get real for a sec: it’s totally normal for this to happen. And, unfortunately, it’s likely for most people. That initial excitement of the new year fades, life gets busy, and before you know it, your resolutions go from hopeful dreams to down the pan.

I get it—I've been there. For years, I stopped making New Year’s resolutions altogether because I always felt like I was setting myself up for failure. I’d have big dreams, grand ideas, and then... crickets.

But here’s the game-changer: I stopped making resolutions and started setting realistic goals.

So, how can you avoid being another statistic? It’s all about creating a solid plan and setting yourself up for success. Let’s break it down:

Step 1: Make It Realistic

Okay, let’s talk goals. I would love to write a couple of books, a blog post every day, a monthly newsletter, and create five brand new courses this year. Plus, there's the small matter of losing the junk from my trunk and getting fit...

It sounds glorious. Super spectacular, right? But here’s the thing—it’s just not realistic for me right now.

Even with nothing else to do, a cleaner and cook to take over the chores, hiring a life coach to keep me on track, someone to walk and groom my two incredibly hairy Tibetan Terriers, and no curve balls sent my way by the Universe - it just ain't gonna happen. And that’s okay. I've come to terms with it.

So, I’ve decided that my realistic goal for 2025 is to write one book and complete the first draft of another, write one blog a week and one newsletter a month. Yes, it’ll be quite a feat, but it’s something I know I can achieve.

Step 2: Make It Supported

The second part of the equation: support. If you’ve been around me for any amount of time, you know I’m all about support. Because let’s face it—no one makes big things happen on their own.

Support looks different for everyone. For me, it’s about having accountability and structure. Right now, when it comes to writing, I get the most support from a community of like-minded peeps who are working towards their goals too (more of that at the end of this page).

I’ve learned that I need to have dedicated writing time each day and I need to know that my readers are expecting me to show up. When I’m surrounded by others who are dedicated to cheering each other on, it makes the accountability way easier.

So, if you want to achieve your goals in 2025, think about what kind of support you need. Maybe it’s a workout buddy. Maybe it’s a coach. Or maybe it’s a group of people who are all working toward the same goal. Whatever it is, don’t go it alone!

Step 3: Celebrate Small Wins

Don't join the Quitters Day club - celebrate your wins instead.

Progress can feel slow, but celebrating small victories along the way helps build momentum. Whether it’s completing a week of workouts or hitting a savings goal, recognizing these achievements keeps you motivated.

Step 4: Track Your Progress

Keep a journal or use an app to track your progress. Seeing how far you’ve come can inspire you to keep going, even when challenges arise.

Step 5: Adjust Your Goals If Necessary

If you find your resolution is too difficult or unrealistic, don’t be afraid to adjust it. Small tweaks to your plan can make it more achievable without completely abandoning it. Life happens. And maybe you suddenly realise that you need to totally change or revise your goal and start again. That's okay, realigning yourself to a better track is great progress and sometimes you need to try something to realise it's not quite right. Review and rev up again!

Step 6: Be Kind to Yourself

Remember, no one is perfect. If you slip up or fall off track, don’t give up completely. Acknowledge the mistake, learn from it, and move forward. Self-compassion helps prevent burnout.

Here’s the deal: you don’t have to be a part of the Quitters Day club. Set goals that are realistic, supported, and actually achievable. The key is planning for success instead of waiting for magic to happen.

And if you've fallen off the goals/resolutions saddle, just haul yourself back up and try again - and ride your rodeo until it's done!
